Supply-only or supply-and-install: define the scope
Byrne Mechanical · · 3 min read
The short answer
A supply-only enquiry asks for fabricated or supplied items; a supply-and-install enquiry also asks for site installation. The label alone does not define every responsibility. Agree who measures, checks drawings, transports, unloads, installs and completes any required testing before accepting the scope.
What to clarify in a supply-only enquiry
Supply-only can suit a contractor or installer who already manages the site work and needs parts made to a drawing. The enquiry should identify the parts, quantities, specified materials, connection details and the drawing revision to be priced.
Do not assume the fabricator will visit the site, verify field dimensions, redesign a fitting or include transport simply because the package is being supplied. Ask which checks and services are included. If existing work needs measuring, identify who will take and approve those measurements before fabrication.
- Who supplies and approves the dimensions?
- Which parts, accessories and connections are included?
- Who arranges collection, transport and unloading?
- How are drawing changes handled before fabrication?
What changes when installation is included
An installation enquiry needs information about the site as well as the parts. Share the project location, expected programme, relevant plans and any known access constraints. Identify the other trades or project contacts the installer will need to coordinate with.
Ask for inclusions and exclusions in writing. Access equipment, supports, insulation, controls, commissioning and testing may involve separate responsibilities or trades. Raising those questions early gives the parties a chance to define the package; it does not mean every item is offered or included by the same contractor.
Compare the same scope, not just the total
Two prices can cover different work even when they refer to the same project. Compare the drawing issue, quantities, specified materials, site work, delivery arrangements and exclusions before deciding that one package costs less.
If an allowance or assumption appears in a quote, ask what must happen for it to become a firm part of the agreement. Keep the clarification with the quote so the people ordering and receiving the work have the same record.
- Same drawing sheets and revision
- Same parts and quantities
- Clear site-work and transport responsibilities
- Agreed timing and treatment of scope changes
How to describe the scope to Byrne
The optional project-details section of the quote form lets you select fabrication / supply only, supply and installation, mechanical contracting, or not sure yet. The selection starts a conversation; it is not a booking or confirmation of availability.
Add your project location, required timeframe and the work you need priced. If responsibility is still being divided between the project team, say so. The shop can then review your enquiry and discuss which requirements, services and arrangements need confirming for the job.
General project-planning guidance. Requirements, materials, dimensions and availability must be confirmed for your project. This guide does not replace the project drawings or specification.
